It was the Spring of 2019, I had been Kim’s business manager for a few years, booking Kim for a multitude of public appearances. As her brand grew we had more business interactions and opportunities. One in particular was a big event which was very personal to us. It was our first joint self-produced venture. In a call to action for sponsorship we reached out to several business owners; most of whom were receptive and consummate professionals. However, as the deadline for deliverables approached some of the committed sponsors were simply MIA. “Where had they gone? Why were they suddenly not responding to emails, phone calls and texts?” We were clearly baffled because they accepted the call to sponsor and their lack of communication left us surmising all sorts of scenarios.
We eventually made contact and were able to get clear reasons why some of the would-be sponsors had fallen off. One was going through a very trying personal time and another was overloaded with seasonal orders which she had to personally handcraft. Though their reasons were totally understandable, their lack of communication was not.
We viewed these types of missteps in communication as an opportunity to address some basic principles which are helpful and necessary in order to succeed in business, garner more referrals, build lasting relationships and to ensure longevity.
